The Match

It was a case of one chance, one goal for the hosts and who else than Mbappé, the former Monégasque and top-scorer in this season’s Champions League. When Vinicius Jr. shot wide just seconds later from a promising position, it seemed as though the writing was on the wall for Monaco, but they ultimately wouldn’t be blown away.

Les Monégasques created chances of their own, with Ansu Fati going close on the stretch. But there was a quality deficit for the Principality club, who lacked the clinical edge that Real Madrid, and specifically Mbappé, did not. The France captain took his second, latching onto Vinicius Jr.’s ball across the box after a delicate flick from Eduardo Camavinga in midfield had opened up the game.

Monaco continued to exist in the game and almost halved the deficit through Jordan Teze, whose attempt to repeat his long-range goal against Manchester City was only inches away from succeeding; Thibault Courtois was saved by the woodwork on that occasion but the Belgian was forced into saves, albeit relatively simple ones from Maghnes Akliouche and Folarin Balogun.

But there was still hope for Monaco as they came out for the second half, but not for long, thanks to Franco Mastantuono’s strike from a tight angle, which settled in Philipp Kohn’s far corner. Four minutes later and Real Madrid had their fourth as Thilo Kehrer turned Vinicius Jr.’s cross past his own goalkeeper.

Vinicius Jr. would then get on the scoresheet himself, profiting from a sloppy Kehrer ball out, running at the Monaco defence, drifting out right and finishing emphatically into the top corner. Jordan Teze would net a consolation following an error playing out from the back from Dani Ceballos.

But the five-goal cushion would be restored by Jude Bellingham late on, as he latched onto a through ball from Fede Valverde, rounded Kohn and tucked into an empty net. A humbling night for Les Monégasques, who may yet need to secure a result against Juventus next week in order to secure their progression to the playoffs.

Monaco player ratings

Philipp Köhn – 3

Caio Henrique – 3

Thilo Kehrer – 2

Kehrer put the ball past Kohn on one occasion and was responsible for two more goals due to his sloppy passing out of the back. He played the ball to Vinicius for the fifth and his misplaced pass also allowed Real Madrid to attack vertically and net their sixth.

Eric Dier – 3

Vanderson – 4

Jordan Teze – 3

The Dutchman’s performance was saved thanks to his late consolation, but you could fairly point the finger at him for four of the five goals. That is not to say that he was directly responsible, but either through sloppy distribution or poor positioning, he had his hand in them. Teze lost possession on 10 occasions and was certainly one of the protagonists of the heavy defeat.

Denis Zakaria – 4

Aleksandr Golovin – 4

Ansu Fati – 4

Maghnes Akliouche – 4

Folarin Balogun – 5

Real Madrid selected player ratings

Kylian Mbappé – 7

It was Mbappé who started the riot against his former club. He played a starring role in the early stages, turning up in the right places to make opportune finishes. By the 26th minute, he had essentially killed the tie off all on his own. His impact waned thereafter, but the damage was already done.

Aurélien Tchouaméni – 6

Jude Bellingham – 6

Eduardo Camavinga – 7

Vinicius Jr. – 8

The Brazilian was booed by a section of the home support in the first half, but he responded perfectly. He put the ball on a plate – selflessly – for Mbappé’s second goal and then did the same for Mastantuono at the start of the second half. It was his cross that was diverted into the Monaco goal for Real Madrid’s fourth, and then he finally got the goal that his performance deserved. Attentive, he nicked the ball from the feet of Mamadou Coulibaly, created the space for the shot and then finished brilliantly.
