AS highlights a long line of footballers who have represented both Atlético Madrid and Real Sociedad, spanning from the 1930s to today.
Early crossovers saw Marculeta, Peña Iriarte and Ipiña move from Real Sociedad to Atlético in the mid 1930s. In the following decade, Basabe headed the opposite way, and Pérez Payá switched clubs in 1950.
The 1960s and early 1970s featured Urtiaga on both sides and goalkeeper Zubiarrain switching from Real Sociedad to Atlético. Later, López Ufarte had 12 years at Real Sociedad before a campaign with Atlético in 1987-88. Uralde and Elduayen also wore both shirts.
In the 1990s and 2000s, Luis García and Juan Gómez featured for both clubs, as did Álvaro Novo and Diego Rivas, who had two Real Sociedad spells after 2003-04 with Atlético.
More recently, Griezmann starred for Real Sociedad from 2009 to 2014, then joined Atlético, left in 2019 and returned on 1 September 2021. Theo Hernández received his first Atlético first-team call-up in 2016-17 for a match against Sociedad Deportiva Eibar, then played for Real Sociedad in 2018-19, and goalkeeper Moyá moved from Atlético in 2018 to Real Sociedad until 2021. The 2020s have brought Germán Valera featuring for Real Sociedad and their B team in 2021-22, Javi Galán’s winter 2024 loan to an injury-hit Real Sociedad and return, Robin Le Normand’s 2024 move to Atlético, and Alexander Sørloth’s form that caught Atlético’s eye.
