Plymouth Argyle and Wigan Athletic shared the points at Home Park on Saturday with a 1-1 draw, after Fraser Murray's late equaliser cancelled out Lorent Tolaj's panenka.

The first half was a scrappy affair, with neither side really in control. Argyle went closest when Tolaj smashed the bar from range inside 15 minutes, but that was the closest anyone would go in the opening 45 minutes.

It would take a spot kick in the 70th minute for the deadlock to be broken. Will Aimson was penalised for holding Tolaj from a corner, which saw the number nine calmly slot home the penalty with a delightful panenka in front of the Devonport End.

However, Ryan Lowe's side had other plans, and they were level when Conor Hazard's poor clearance was picked up in midfield by the Latics, and played through to Fraser Murray to level the contest with 10 minutes left.

Neither side could find a winner in the last ten minutes though, and Wigan managed to snatch a point on their travels, leaving Argyle wondering what could've been after a lapse of concentration at the back.

Young starlet Tegan Finn looked lively early on, bursting down the right wing and flashing an inviting cross which found Bali Mumba at the back stick. His effort was deflected away from danger.

In-form striker Tolaj then rattled the bar of Tickle's goal just after the quarter of an hour mark. He dug out a nice effort from a well worked corner routine, which cannoned off the bar and away to safety.

Brendan Galloway then sent Owen Oseni free on the left with a delightful through ball, or so he thought. A theatrical dive from Steven Sessegnon sold referee Ben Atkinson, who pulled it back for a Wigan free kick, much to the disbelief of the home fans.

Fraser Murray then had a great chance to give the visitors the lead with a headed effort from a deep Jensen Weir cross. However, Malachi Boateng applied just enough pressure to ensure the winger directed his header wide of Conor Hazard's goal.

The momentum was really with Argyle in the opening half hour. Boateng dug out another strike from distance after some good work from Bali Mumba down the left flank, but his effort never troubled Tickle in the Wigan net.

On the stroke of half-time, Tolaj stroked a free-kick just over the bar, after Luke Robinson clattered Oseni off the ball, which would prove to be the last chance of the opening 45 minutes.

The teams went in level at the break, with Argyle just about edging the contest thus far. It's fair to say referee Atkinson didn't get the warmest of receptions from the Home Park crowd as he went down the tunnel.

The opening 15 minutes of the second half were very similar to the first, with neither side grabbing a foothold in the game. The hosts introduced Jamie Paterson for Law McCabe to try and turn the tide in their favour.

Referee Atkinson wasn't a popular man with the home fans, giving multiple soft fouls in Wigan's favour, before getting in the way of an Argyle attack, which saw tempers flare.

However, he would soon be in their good books, as he awarded Plymouth a penalty just before the 70-minute mark. Ex-Pilgrim Aimson was deemed to have been too rough on Tolaj from a corner.

The man who won the penalty stepped up, and bravely panenka'd it into the back of the net in front of the Devonport End. The Swiss striker with his sixth goal in nine matches for Argyle, and playing with confidence coursing through his veins.

The lead would only last ten minutes though, as a hashed clearance from Hazard in goal wa picked up in the middle of the park by Weir, played into Christian Saydee, who's perfectly weighted through ball allowed Murray to break Plymouth's defensive line and slot home the equaliser.

Wigan smelled blood after their equaliser, and Weir forced Hazard into a strong save just before the 90th minute with a strike from range after Paul Mullin burst down the left and found the midfielder on the edge of the box.

Neither side could find a winner in six minutes of stoppage time though, as Atkinson drew the contest to a close.

It was a disappointing setback for the Greens having gone one goal up, but Wigan's performance in the final 15 minutes earned them a solid point on the road, and gave those dedicated supporters something to smile about on the long ride home.

Tom Cleverley reacts as Plymouth Argyle pegged back for draw by Wigan Athletic

After serving the final match of his touchline ban, Argyle boss Tom Cleverley spoke to the press after the draw with Wigan, saying: "t's a disappointing point.

"I think first of all, I don't think it's an unfair point. I don't think we did enough to win the football match. I didn't think either team did. It looked like it had nil-nil written all over it, and it becomes a disappointing point when we get ahead.

"I didn't think they were going to do anything all afternoon to break us down. They maybe got in our box a couple of times, but when you're ahead in those games, the type of games after you say, I love them, scruffy 1-0s and that's what that should have been.

"It was a massively preventable goal e conceded. It's not the only reason we've not won the game today. I don't think we took the game to them enough. And yeah, it's it's a fair point, but it's a disappointing one."

Speaking to the press after the game, a bouyant Ryan Lowe said: "I thought we were fantastic with and without the ball.

"A different week, in terms the build up to this, we knew Argyle have turned a little bit of a corner. We knew how good they were going to be. We nullified their strengths, I think.

The decision for the penalty, I'm disappointed in it. I think the whole crowd was disappointed in some of the decisions [made by the referee], but it is what it is you can't do nothing about it, you can't dwell on it now.

"[The] lads never gave up and got a fantastic goal, which we said we'd have a bit more of the ball in the second half, and be able to play a little bit more. The wind caused the carnage for both teams.

"I'd definitely have been aggrieved if we hadn't got a point, but on another day, we'd maybe take three, but I'm not going to be too fussy and a point's a good point to come here."
