Plymouth Argyle 3-0 Barnsley: FLW reports as Pilgrims breeze past Tykes

FLW reports as Plymouth Argyle hosted Barnsley in League One.

Plymouth Argyle romped to an excellent 3-0 victory over Barnsley in League One, as they won back-to-back matches for the first time this season.

It took Argyle less than a minute to open the scoring with a stunner from Oliver Irow. Julio Pleguezuelo's diagonal ball was taken down brilliantly by the Tottenham loanee, and he shifted inside before thundering a right-footed shot into the top right corner from 20 yards out.

Midway through the first half Plymouth doubled their advantage, and it wasn't one Barnsley keeper Rogan Ravenhill would want to see again, as he spilt Wes Harding's long throw straight onto the head of Ronan Curtis, who nodded into an empty net.

Just over five minutes after half time, Bim Pepple put the game beyond doubt with an excellent solo goal, getting the better of Connor O'Riordan, strode into the box and curled a powerful strike into the top right corner to seal a second consecutive win for the Greens.

The Pilgrims took less than a minute to open the scoring. A diagional ball from Pleguezuelo found Irow on the right flank, who cut inside and leathered a venomous effort into the top right corner.

Harvey White's 30-yard free-kick 10 minutes in then had Barnsley keeper Ravenhill worried, but the effort flew narrowly over the crossbar.

The Tykes had their first chance of the match just before the 20 minute-mark. A scramble in the box from a Reyes Cleary cross fell kindly to Tyrese Noslin on the edge of the box, and he blasted a powerful strike wide.

Not even two minutes later, Argyle had a second. A howler from Ravenhill as he spilt Harding's long-throw and Curtis capitalised, heading into an empty net.

Harding then looked to add one of his own not long after the second goal. A short corner was played into the Argyle skipper's feet and he struck a shot just wide of Ravehill's near post.

Cleary continued to be the only shining light in what was a gloomy afternoon for Barnsley. His dangerous cross forced Alex Mitchell to head it behind for a corner 10 minutes before half time.

The resultant corner would create a shot at goal, but it was surprisingly for the hosts. White picked up the ball inside his own half and attempted to catch Ravenhill off his line, but the Barnsley keeper managed to get behind the ball to spare any further blushes.

Tom Cleverley's side maintained their two-goal advantage as the half time whistle blew, and looked very good value for their lead, as they'd had the lion's share of the chances thus far.

Five minutes after play resumed for the second half, Argyle had a third. Pepple won his battle with O'Riordan on the left flank and strode into the box before curling one into the top right corner.

Barnsley had the ball in the net right on the hour-mark thanks to Ben Hamed Toure from a corner, but referee Martin Woods spotted a foul in the box on the lead up to the goal, so it wouldn't stand.

Toure then dug out an inviting cross moments later which fell at the feet of Cameron McGeehan. Somehow, the Tykes' skipper blasted his effort over from six yards out, compounding his side's misery.

Argyle would see out the rest of the game with relative ease. A few speculative shots from Luca Connell were the closest the visitors went to finding the net, on what was a miserable afternoon for the Yorkshire side.

After three minutes of stoppage time, Woods brought the contest to a close, and Plymouth picked up back-to-back league wins for the first time this season, lifting them to sixth in the table.

As for Barnsley, it was a second heavy defeat in a row after last week's 5-1 thrashing at home to Stevenage. Concerning for Daniel Stendel, who will be demanding a strong response in their next game.
