With Plymouth Argyle's Championship status safely secured for another season, the club can start looking to put a squad together for next season.

The Pilgrims survived by the skin of their teeth, finishing 21st, one point above the relegation zone, but that won't matter now, and the club will be looking to improve their squad to ensure they can move up the table next season.

Given their lack of financial spending power compared to some clubs in the division, Plymouth have relied on loan players a lot this season, and will likely have to do so again next term.

Plymouth will be looking to get their business done early this summer, and they've already taken action to bring two of their loanees back to Home Park next season.

Spurs duo Alfie Devine and Ash Phillips have both spent the second half of the season on loan at Home Park, and Plymouth Argyle's director of football Neil Dewsnip confirmed to the Plymouth Herald that they were in talks to bring the pair back to the club next season.

He said: "The loan players will obviously go back (to the parent clubs) but we are already in discussions to see if we can maybe access one or two of those to stay again next year, but we are very early in the discussions."

This shows that whilst nothing is done yet, Plymouth are being proactive and looking to get their signings over the line early, in a bid to beat any potential competitors to their signatures.

It's also crucial that Plymouth maintain positive relationships with clubs like Spurs, as it'll mean they're more likely to loan them players in the future, and as we've seen this season, they rely a lot on that market.

Both players have performed well at Home Park this season, particularly Phillips, who looks a really promising prospect, and another loan spell with the club would likely benefit the pair next term.

Since joining in January, 18-year-old central defender Phillips has made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Pilgrims, starting 18 of those, and missed just two games during his spell at Home Park.

Despite his age, he broke into the Pilgrims' starting XI and looked impressive, and he'd only get better with a full season under his belt at Home Park.

Midfielder Devine was a little bit more in and out of the starting XI, but he still played 15 Championship games for the Pilgrims, making nine starts, including a start on the final day of the season as his side beat Hull City 1-0 to secure their Championship status.

Both players made a good impact, and would likely be welcomed back by the Green Army next season, so Plymouth will be hoping to secure the Spurs duo again this summer.

From a Spurs' point of view, they may be more willing to send the pair to Plymouth again, as the players know the surroundings and won't need any time to adapt to a new club, so the Pilgrims certainly have an advantage.

It remains to be seen where they'll end up, but holding talks with Spurs this early ensures Plymouth have put themselves in a good position to re-sign the duo.
