Wrexham have kicked off their transfer window with the signing of striker Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle.

According to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph, the Welsh side paid Plymouth just £700,000 for Hardie, which is widely regarded as a steal for a player of his ability.

The 28-year-old has recorded double figures in the past two seasons for an Argyle side struggling at the bottom of the Championship, highlighting the goalscoring instinct Wrexham have acquired.

The Red Dragons’ interest in the Scotsman is long-standing, with Football League World exclusively revealing their desire to sign Hardie in December.

Football League World’s Plymouth Argyle fan pundit, Luke Hodge, is trying to look at the sale positively ahead of Tom Cleverley’s first transfer window at Home Park.

Plymouth Argyle advised to reinvest Ryan Hardie money after “frustrating” sale

“It is frustrating, but there are probably many clauses written into our players' contracts because of relegation,” explained Luke. “And Ryan's was £700,000.

“He was in the last year of his contract. He was offered another one but didn't sign. He's ambitious and now 28 years old, he's been given an opportunity to go to Wrexham and stay in the Championship.

“He's been a proven goalscorer in that division for a couple of years now. Every Argyle fan that I've seen wishes him the very best of luck and thanks him for what he's done at the club.

“We all know that he's worth more than £700,000, but hopefully that money will be given to Tom Cleverley, we can reinvest it in the squad and get some players through the door as soon as possible.”

Plymouth can’t rue Hardie sale

This summer is huge for Plymouth Argyle as they prepare for life back in League One.

After appointing a new, young manager in the shape of Tom Cleverley, news recently emerged that Real Madrid and Wales star Gareth Bale is fronting a US consortium looking to takeover at Home Park.

These factors are reason for real excitement for the Pilgrims and they need to match that with an equally impressive transfer window.

Although Argyle could’ve commanded a much higher fee for Hardie without his relegation clause, the £700,000 they have inherited should be reinvested wisely.

A few smart additions could put them in good stead ahead of next term. If they enter the 2025/26 League One campaign on a roll, they could be back in the Championship the following season in a much stronger position to solidify their status in the second-tier.
