FLW's Plymouth Argyle fan pundit has given his verdict on whether the club should reignite their interest in Huddersfield Town midfielder Herbie Kane.

It has been an excellent start to the season for Plymouth Argyle in League One.

Despite sitting in the relegation zone in early January, Plymouth only missed out on the play-off places on the final day of last season after a stunning run of form following the turn of the year, and their momentum has continued into the new campaign.

It was a strong summer transfer window for Plymouth as they brought in nine new signings, with Murphy Cooper, Alex Hartridge, Harvey White, Tyreeq Bakinson, Oliver Irow and Will Evans among those to arrive at Home Park.

However, while the Pilgrims were able to secure permanent deals for two of last season's loanees, Wes Harding and Alex Mitchell, they did not bring Huddersfield Town midfielder Herbie Kane back to Home Park this summer.

Kane spent the second half of last season on loan at Argyle, and he scored one goal and provided two assists in eight appearances before a hamstring injury cut his campaign short in April, but while the Devon outfit were keen on a reunion with the 27-year-old, as exclusively revealed by FLW, a deal did not materialise.

Plymouth would have been disappointed to miss out on Kane, but they have made an impressive start to the season in his absence, with Tom Cleverley's men currently sitting third in the League One table after picking up 13 points from their first seven games.

When asked if the club should reignite their interest in Kane in January, FLW's Plymouth Argyle fan pundit Luke Hodge insisted that the Pilgrims should not make a move for the ex-Barnsley man, claiming that Cleverley already has sufficient depth in midfield.

"I don't think it will happen, and I don't think it should happen," Luke told FLW.

"We've got a very settled squad that are in good form, results have been coming, and you don't start pulling that midfield apart in January just because a familiar name is available.

"Harvey White in the middle of the park is growing stronger game by game, you can see it in the way he's demanding the ball and picking passes.

"He's comfortably our most creative player in midfield, and he's building a nice relationship with either Tyreeq Bakinson or Malachi Boateng, depending on who Tom Cleverley puts next to him.

"That's starting to look like a proper partnership now, and we should protect that.

"We've also got the likes of Bradley Ibrahim, who is able to play in that central midfield role as well.

"He's a different style of player than Kane, no questions about that, but he's still very effective and gives you something else, whether he's coming off the bench or in the starting XI.

"Between White, Bakinson, Boateng and Ibrahim, I just don't see the hole that Kane would be filling.

"If he's fully fit again, fair play to him, but Argyle shouldn't be going back in for him."

Kane made a big impact at Home Park last season after his arrival in February, with Plymouth picking up 16 points from a possible 24 in the games in which he featured, and Cleverley described the midfielder's performances as "outstanding".

As he continues his recovery from injury, Kane is yet to play a single minute for Huddersfield this season, and the fact that Terriers head coach Martin Drury refused to rule out his exit before the end of the summer window suggests he could be available in January.

With that in mind, the door could be open for the Pilgrims to strike a deal for Kane, but Cleverley will be keen not to disrupt the balance in his midfield, and there are question marks over whether he would get in the starting line-up ahead of the likes of White and Boateng.
