Plymouth will be hoping that Spurs don't recall Oliver Irow after his excellent start, as it could derail their promotion bid this season.

Plymouth Argyle made it three wins on the bounce in League One with a 4-2 victory against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

Tom Cleverley’s side were among the favourites for promotion in pre-season, but they had an inconsistent start to the campaign.

Yet, they have started to show why they were fancied in recent weeks, overcoming Doncaster, Barnsley and the Seasiders to move up to third in the table.

Whilst it’s all about results, Plymouth have scored ten goals in that period, with Cleverley’s side really starting to click in the final third, which has made them a great watch, as well as a good team.

Oliver Irow has enjoyed fantastic start to life at Plymouth Argyle

It is a team effort from Argyle, and Cleverley will be pleased with all of his attacking options, but there’s no denying that Oliver Irow has made a huge difference to the side.

The versatile forward joined the Pilgrims from Tottenham, and even though he is capable of playing centrally or on the right, he has excelled down the left flank at his new club.

Irow has scored three goals in five league games, with those strikes coming in the past two outings.

As well as finding the net, Irow has proven to be a massive threat with his pace, direct style and ability to beat his opponent, which is why Argyle have been so dangerous as a collective.

Plymouth Argyle will have to plan for Oliver Irow January exit

It’s still very early days, but Plymouth fans will already be wondering whether they will get to keep Irow for the full campaign.

The England youth international may have signed a season-long loan at Home Park, but it’s normal for those to include recall clauses, and the way Irow has hit the ground running is not going to have gone unnoticed.

Huddersfield Town were in a similar position last season, as the impressive Leo Castledine was recalled by Chelsea, with the attacking midfielder then sold on to Middlesbrough.

Of course, it’s a risk that Plymouth will have been well aware of when they agreed to sign Irow, but it has the potential to derail their promotion push, with Castledine’s exit undoubtedly harming the Terriers in the previous campaign.

So, the hierarchy at Plymouth must have plans in place for the worst-case scenario, even if the January window will seem a long way away at the moment.

Tottenham will be open-minded on Oliver Irow’s future going into January

From Spurs’ perspective, they will be delighted at how Irow has started at Plymouth, and they will hope he maintains that form over the coming months.

That could leave them with a big decision to make, as if offers do arrive for the player, they may feel it’s the right time to cash-in on a permanent basis.

But, they would also know a productive spell in the Championship will only increase his value further, so that will come into their thinking.

Ultimately, Spurs’ priority will be the player and themselves, as it should be, which could be problematic for Plymouth in the New Year.

However, that’s a long way off, and, for now, all parties will be delighted at how Irow has settled at Plymouth, and they will hope this form continues.

In an ideal world, Irow will put Plymouth in the promotion picture, and he will be enjoying his football so much that it’s agreed he should stay for the rest of the season. Then, Argyle would try to bring him in permanently as a Championship club.

Again, we must stress that it’s early days, and the challenge for Irow is to show what he can do over a number of months, as opposed to just a few games.

So, it will be intriguing to see how this develops, but there’s no doubting the talent of Irow, so Plymouth must be prepared for all possibilities heading into January if he continues to impact games in this way.
