Pochettino: USMNT coach gives verdict on Weah’s new Juventus role | OneFootball

Mauricio Pochettino sees positives in Timothy Weah playing as a full-back for Juventus but may continue using him as a winger for USMNT.

Weah has been playing as a full-back at Juventus over the last couple of months and USMNT coach Pochettino reflected on the 25-year-old’s new role in Turin.

“I think that for Tim and us, we need to see him play in different positions as part of his training,” the ex-Tottenham and Chelsea coach said at a press conference.

“I believe that, if one is smart, playing in different roles offers a chance to understand the game better and see which positions one can cover. We may use him differently, but I think it’s an important part of his football education. We must always be positive and optimistic.

“Perhaps, given how our attack is formed, he could play as a winger, on the left or on the right. But he can also be a wing-back or a full-back, as he’s doing at Juventus. It can be an alternative.”

Weah is in his second season at Juventus. He started the new campaign under Thiago Motta as a winger, but he’s been deployed in the right-back position in the last seven Serie A matches.

Weah has covered multiple roles at Juventus this term. He has played as a left or right winger and even as a centre-forward in a Champions League match against Aston Villa in November as Juventus’ strikers Dusan Vlahovic and Arkadiusz Milik were injured.

Weah has scored six goals and provided five assists in 33 Juventus appearances across all competitions this term.

His contract at the Allianz Stadium runs out in June 2028.
