Eintracht Frankfurt and SSC Napoli played out a goalless draw on Matchday 4 of the UEFA Champions League.

Eintracht head coach Dino Toppmöller made five changes from the 1-1 draw at Heidenheim three days ago. Mario Götze replaced the injured Can Uzun, while Jean-Mattéo Bahoya, Jonathan Burkardt, Farès Chaibi and Nnamdi Collins came in for Ritsu Doan, Ansgar Knauff, Ellyes Skhiri and Elye Wahi. Bahoya with first chance Eintracht sent out an early sign of attacking intent after just three minutes, when Bahoya took aim from 16 metres after winning the ball in midfield, but his central shot was comfortably saved by Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. Spotlight on Zetterer  After that, Napoli had a spell of possession and their first opportunity in the sixth minute, but Michael Zetterer denied Rasmus Højlund from close range. The Eintracht goalkeeper was in the thick of things again in the 13th minute. Eljif Elmas got past Rasmus Kristensen on the left flank and then cut inside, but his effort was saved by Zetterer.

Eagles strong in defence The hosts had the majority of the play after that but Toppmöller’s men kept it tight at the back, were strong in the key duels and didn’t allow the Italian champions any further opportunities before the break. Chance for Knauff

It wasn’t until the 68th minute that Napoli threatened in the penalty area again. The impressive Robin Koch got a foot in the way of Scott McTominay’s attempt to divert it behind for a corner. Five minutes later, substitute Ansgar Knauff had the best chance of the game so far when he unexpectedly had a free shot at goal, but couldn’t beat the Napoli keeper.

The Italian side then had their biggest chance in the 76th minute, when substitute Noa Lang delivered the ball from the left into the box, where Elmas flicked it onto Frank Anguissa, who was stopped by a last-ditch challenge from Arthur Theate.

Fight to the end The contest opened up in final quarter of an hour as both sides looked for a winner. Miguel Gutierrez almost turned Götze’s cross into his own net, then from a counterattack at the other end, McTominay couldn’t keep his finish down from Anguissa’s cross, with Chaibi disturbing him at the last moment.

There was one final chance in the battling Hessians’ box from a corner in stoppage time, but Zetterer was once again on hand. And so the Eagles, who introduced Aurèle Amenda and Mo Dahoud in added time, earned a deserved point against the Italian champions.
