Mikel Arteta has admitted that Arsenal have a point to prove in Sunday's Carabao Cup final.
Arsenal face Manchester City at Wembley aiming to end a six-year wait for a major trophy. The Gunners have positioned themselves in the running for all four trophies this season, with Arteta's side nine points clear in thePremier League and into the last eight of the FA Cup and Champions League.
A quadruple has never previously been achieved by an English team and Arteta admits Sunday's showdown could be a 'defining moment' for his team. He said Arsenal need to demonstrate an ability to win big games and have a point to prove this weekend.
"It's going to be one of the defining moments because at the end of the day it is about whether you win the trophy or not.
"That is the most important thing once you get to the final but in order to be there you have to do a lot of things. There are a lot of things the team has done so far, but we need to prove that point, that's clear, and it has to be done on the pitch."
Arteta was asked at hispre-match press conference about the role Viktor Gyokeres could have in deciding Sunday's final. The Spaniard was specifically asked whether the club's leading scorer was signed to get Arsenal 'over the line' in finals. Gyokeres has scored 16 goals in all competitions since arriving from Portuguese champions Sporting CP last summer.
"All of our players have to perform daily at this level. When it comes to the crucial moments and when it comes to the moment to attack a trophy and take it and bring it home is when we need players to step up and make a difference, that is clear."
