Police in France have arrested more than 400 people after violent clashes erupted following Paris Saint-Germain’s win against Arsenal in the Champions League final, per BBC.

About 22,000 police were deployed across the country for the high-stakes game on Saturday after PSG’s victory in the competition last year sparked celebrations that turned deadly.

Tram lines were halted and several metro stations were shut in a bid to minimise disturbances.

PSG retained their Champions League crown by beating Arsenal on penalties in the final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest.

Thousands of supporters gathered on the Champs-Elysees and in other parts of Paris to celebrate their team’s victory.

But the celebrations led to scenes of tensions and unrest, as many set off fireworks and flares, injuring several police officers.

Police responded with teargas to disperse the crowd.

Clashes also erupted around PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where thousands of people watched the game on screens.

The unrest is said to have damaged six vehicles, two businesses and a bus shelter.

France’s interior ministry said 416 were apprehended across the country, including 280 in Paris.

Interior minister Laurent Nunez said seven police officers were injured in the fray and called the unrest ‘absolutely unacceptable’.
