Police in France have arrested more than 400 people after violent clashes erupted following Paris Saint-Germain’s win against Arsenal in the Champions League final (BBC).
Approximately 22,000 police officers were deployed across the country for the high-stakes game on Saturday.
PSG’s victory in the competition last year sparked celebrations that turned deadly, and police were eager to maintain control this time around.
Tram services were halted, and several metro stations were closed in a bid to minimise disruption.
PSG retained their Champions League crown by beating Arsenal on penalties in the final at the Puskás Arena in Budapest.
Thousands of supporters gathered on the Champs-Elysees and in other parts of Paris to celebrate their team’s victory.
However, the celebrations led to scenes of tensions and unrest, as many people set off fireworks and flares, injuring several police officers.
Police responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Clashes also erupted around PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where thousands of people watched the game on screens.
Six vehicles, two businesses and a bus shelter were damaged.
France’s interior ministry said 416 people were apprehended across the country, including 280 in Paris.
Interior minister Laurent Nunez said seven police officers were injured in the fray and called the unrest ‘absolutely unacceptable’.
