The new Premier League season is almost upon us and to celebrate, we have enlisted the help of some football-loving pop stars to preview and predict the coming campaign.
Today we've got Jakob Swann, a Tottenham fan and drummer from The Florentinas!
This season will be a tough one for Spurs, with our new coach Thomas Frank trying to balance domestic league and cups with Champions League football. We have some great young players coming through, but with Son leaving and Maddison out for most of the season it will be up to the more senior players to step up and lead us forwards. So for this season it would be great to finish top 6 in the league and progress well into the knockout phases of European football.
If I had to be bold I would say we could finish top 4. Pre-season has looked solid defensively (APART FROM THE BAYERN GAME!), and Frank has got us well organised at the back. We have also been pressing hard and making it difficult for teams to play against us. If Spurs are to be top 4 we need Vicario to be stronger on set-pieces and protect the hamstrings of Van der Ven as, when fully fit, nobody can outrun him. In attack we need someone to make us tick like Maddison has done so well in previous seasons. Maybe this is the season Solanke really fulfils his potential and bangs in over 20 goals in the league…you did ask for bold!
As Fergie famously said, ‘Lads, it’s Tottenham’. This season us Spurs fans will have a rollercoaster, no doubt about it. Even last season we were 17th in the league but won our first European trophy in over 40 years (thanks Ange)! Spurs will fill hearts with joy and also break them. It’s what happens, but we will do it with style and passion, and us fans will keep supporting.
Our lead singer Paddy is a Liverpool fan, so I must give them a mention as they are surely favourites to win again with some great signings like Florian Wirtz. He will add so many more options to their attack, and they are an exciting team to watch. However, what the league needs is a really close title race again, with 3 or 4 teams fighting to the end. It may not be Spurs, but Arsenal, City and Chelsea could be close challengers this season.
Newly promoted teams have struggled the last few seasons, so it may be one of those three managers. He seems a decent fella, but Scott Parker at Burnley is the prediction. Although their defence was excellent last season, they have lost their goalkeeper James Trafford and also Egan-Riley from the back-line. It would be brilliant to see the club thrive and survive, but it will be a tough challenge. Leeds, Burnley and Sunderland are all teams with great history in the game, and although it seems cruel to think about sackings before a ball has even been kicked, football at the top level is brutal!
I have big hopes for the Croatian Luka Vušković! He’s only 18 and made his debut for Spurs this summer. Within eight minutes he had scored and got an assist…and he is a central defender! He is one for the future, and it will be so exciting to see him develop at Spurs.
Mo Salah. He is not slowing down, is the heartbeat of Liverpool and still seems as motivated as ever to be the very best.
Erling Haaland. I think the second half of last season was a blip. He always starts strong, and this season he will keep scoring.
Liverpool. They have lost some players but have bought in some real quality in many areas of the pitch. The sentimental part of me hopes they do it in glorious memory of Jota.
Sunderland, Leeds, Burnley.
The Florentinas’ new track, The Scary Thing Is is out now.
