Portland Timbers will only have themselves to blame after a lackluster performance against the visiting San Jose Earthquakes ended in a 1-1 draw at Providence Park.
Scorers: Mosquera 71'; Judd 90+3'
Sent off: Harkes 53'
Phil Neville's troops were on the front foot early and often in the opening exchanges, and nearly thought they took the lead in the 12th minute through Antony, only for the Brazilian to have his tidy finish pulled back for offside.
The Earthquakes had a glorious chance to find an opener of their own from just six yards out after a post-corner loose ball fell to midfielder Beau Leroux, but his sprawling attempt could only pull just wide.
It would remain deadlocked heading into the half-time interval, with Timbers fans seeing star man Antony taken off due to injury in the 51st minute just two days after learning the long-term fate of winger Jonathan Rodriguez.
Veteran San Jose midfielder Ian Harkes would receive his marching orders for a second yellow soon after, however, with the Timbers capitalizing in the 71st minute when young right-back Juan Mosquera slotted home to bank his first goal of the 2025 season to break the deadlock.
But Portland would be left stunned in the third minute of added time when shot-stopper James Pantemis failed to hold on to a routine save on Ousseni Bouda's drive, with the rebound falling to Preston Judd who would convert from inside the six-yard box to pull the scoreline back to level terms.
With that, the Timbers failed to temporarily seize control of second-spot in the Western Conference, with ten-man San Jose happy to take a point away on the road in a performance worthy of the full-time result.
