The French forward Mathys Tel, whom Tottenham Hotspur permanently signed from Bayern Munich last summer for a $40 million transfer fee, has once again become an active name on the transfer radar following the conclusion of the Premier League season.
Although his number of appearances on the pitch throughout his nearly one-year tenure in North London remained at a satisfactory level, his presence in the starting XI fell significantly short of expectations. This picture has sent conflicting signals within the club’s internal hierarchy, while simultaneously paving the way for external market demands to materialize concretely.
As things stand on the tactical board, the current situation on the pitch is as follows: The player wants a move, Porto stands as the strongest suitor, Galatasaray has rolled up their sleeves for official contacts, Bournemouth has opened negotiations, and both Lille and Frankfurt are in the enquiry phase. Tottenham, on the other hand, is neither sanctioning a permanent sale nor completely releasing him.
The instability triggered by successive managerial changes at Tottenham severely disrupted Mathys Tel’s developmental arc. Following turbulent spells under the stewardship of Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor, it was only after Roberto De Zerbi took over the dugout in March that Tel finally secured regular first-team minutes.
With the Italian taking the reins, Tel transformed into an increasingly decisive figure in Tottenham’s relegation battle. De Zerbi’s trust in launching Tel onto the pitch visibly increased, standing in stark contrast to the club’s other wingers.
Throughout the bulk of the season, strong signals emerged from the player’s camp indicating that Tel wanted to part ways with Tottenham. It was reported that the French attacker felt immense shock after being excluded from the Champions League squad selection on two separate occasions.
Conversely, the script flipped during the final stretch of the campaign. Having won De Zerbi’s trust, it was reported that Tel now wished to stay at Tottenham, aiming to progress in a stable environment where he feels trusted and valued.
However, according to the latest breaking transfer reports, Tel has begun dropping concrete hints that he is ready to depart Tottenham this summer window. In short, the player appears to be navigating a complex psychological process where his mindset shifts on a minute-by-minute basis.
Portuguese champions FC Porto stand out as one of Tel’s most potent suitors. Head coach Francesco Farioli is actively hunting for a versatile attacker capable of deploying in various roles across the final third; a profile that perfectly mirrors Tel.
According to sources closely monitoring the transfer market, Tel has been offered to Porto. It is reported that the valuation in question hovers around $40 million, and any potential deal is expected to be structured as a loan with an option to buy.
Concurrently, Premier League outfit Bournemouth has launched initial talks. Much like Porto, the Cherries are interested in a loan-with-option formula for the attacker. Also crowding the race are continental clubs LOSC Lille and Eintracht Frankfurt, who have also recently registered their interest in the 21-year-old.
On the Galatasaray front, the operation has taken a more concrete turn. The Turkish champions have established official contact with Tottenham to test the waters regarding their financial expectations for Tel. It is understood that head coach Okan Buruk is seeking a versatile forward capable of operating across three different attacking positions, and Tel fits these criteria flawlessly. Galatasaray’s Champions League qualification is viewed as a major trump card in these negotiations (though Porto also holds the same hand).
Acting upon Okan Buruk’s tactical demand, the board has placed Tel at the top of their agenda and plans to query Tottenham’s valuation by intensifying official contacts in the coming days. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that Tel falls under the scope of the newly implemented 10+4 foreign player regulation in the Süper Lig, which creates an additional strategic advantage for Galatasaray.
The club’s stance carries a sense of artificial clarity. Officially, Tottenham has issued no statement suggesting they plan to sideline or transfer Tel. The English outfit had blocked the player’s departure during the previous winter window. According to club insiders, transfer rumors are primarily being fueled by the player and agent side, whereas the Tottenham board views Tel as an integral piece of their project.
Nevertheless, the practical picture on the ground tells a different story. Signs exist indicating that Tottenham could potentially greenlight Tel’s departure. This formula appears reasonable to both sides, especially if a loan model with an option to buy is preferred. Furthermore, reports that Spurs are making moves for Savinho bring along the probability that Tel could be pushed down the pecking order, given that both players operate in similar attacking departments.
Looking at the financial ledger, a clear picture emerges: Tel is locked into a long-term contract with Tottenham extending until 2031. This hands the club an incredibly strong bargaining position, making an immediate sale or a low-cost departure unlikely. The player’s market value is reportedly tagged at around $34.5 million, meaning a sale right now would result in a financial loss on their initial $40 million investment. These facts indicate the club will not compromise for a low fee.
In a loan scenario, however, the dynamics shift. The loan-with-option-to-buy model stands out as the most viable escape route; in this formula, the total package of the loan fee and the purchase option will form the axis of club-to-club negotiations. It remains unclear exactly what loan fee and option amount Porto or Galatasaray might put on the table under this model.
