FC Porto have launched a limited-edition shirt to mark the first anniversary of Pinto da Costa’s death from prostate cancer, with profits going to Fundação FC Porto.
O Jogo reports that 2,594 shirts are on sale, each linked to one of the club’s trophies from his 42-year presidency. Each shirt carries an NFC chip that directs a phone to a page detailing that specific title.
The back features the number 42 to reflect his years in office. In November, André Villas-Boas told a General Assembly the club were preparing a commemorative shirt that would display the title count and pay proper tribute to his legacy.
At 00:42 on Sunday, exactly one year on, a drone show over the Dragão is planned, visible from outside the stadium.
That day Porto host Nacional in the league and will surely want to dedicate any win to his memory. The club will also publish on their official website a digital version of the memorial created for the former president.
Supporters will be able to explore the space virtually and see how it came together, from items left by fans at Gate 24 to their collection and curation, and the final installation inside the stadium. The physical memorial has been visited by more than 15,000 people.
