Portsmouth are in talks with Burton Albion over a deal for Tyrese Shade

Portsmouth are exploring a deadline day deal to bring in Burton Albion frontman Tyrese Shade.

Pompey have been hard at work over the summer with an onus on improving their forward options ahead of their third successive campaign at Championship level. Last season, their 49 goals scored landed them in the bottom six for attacking output.

The wide areas have been bolstered with the return of Abu Kamara and the loan arrival of exciting 17-year-old Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, and £3 million was spent to bring in Almeria frontman Marko Milovanovic.

However, John Mousinho clearly isn't done with the attacking additions, with Pompey's eyes set on landing one of League One's breakout stars from last season.

According to Pete O'Rourke, Portsmouth are in talks with Burton over a move for Shade, who netted 14 in all competitions last season in his debut campaign at the Pirelli Stadium.

The former Leicester City academy man made his return to the EFL this time last year, having spent the previous 18 months in the National League following a difficult few campaigns in League Two with the likes of Walsall and Swindon Town.

Burton brought him back after he netted 14 times in the fifth tier for Eastleigh, and he matched that last season. His five goals in the FA Cup included a hat-trick in their second round win over Brackley Town, and earned him the Golden Boot for the proper rounds of the competition.

Shade made his first appearance of the new campaign off the bench in the Brewers' loss to Notts County on Saturday, having taken a little longer to get back up to speed during pre-season due to a few small injuries.

Despite Burton beginning the campaign without Shade in their squad, there's no doubt that the 26-year-old is one of Gary Bowyer's most important assets.

Earlier this summer, Championship new boys Lincoln City had a £2 million bid rejected by the Brewers for the striker, so the least Portsmouth will have to part ways with is a decent seven-figure bid, with Football League World having first revealed interest from Pompey and Charlton Athletic earlier this month.

With the transfer window closing at 11pm later today, though, there's the potential that the asking price has gone up, too, as Burton will need to factor in time to source a replacement at short notice.

Burton will likely be bracing for a battle to avoid the drop to League Two once again this season, and keeping Shade will increase their chances of doing just that.

While there's no doubting Shade's ability at League One level, both in terms of scoring goals and how well he can beat players with the ball at his feet, the 26-year-old has never played above the third tier.

Portsmouth will need to be sure that the Burton man can make that step-up to Championship level before they look at dropping a sizable seven-figure fee, which the Brewers likely will demand at this stage, to bring him in.

The blueprint is there, though. Just last year, Rumarn Burrell continued his ascent up the EFL by moving from Burton to QPR and scored 10 times last season.

Last season, only Adrian Segecic scored more than five league goals for Pompey, so if Shade does follow in the Hoops frontman's footsteps, he'd be a more than useful addition to John Mousinho's side.
