Pompey have been active in the market to build a squad which will be suitable to the style of football John Mousinho wants them to play and kick on from last term.

However, they have not had the brightest start, as their league campaign began with one win in the first three league games, which leaves them 15th in the table.

Mousinho recently managed to add to his midfield with the arrival of Iyad Mohamed and for him they have paid a €300,000 to €400,000 fee to Casa Pia.

However, Portsmouth are looking to add some new faces to the squad before the window slams shut on Tuesday.

The Championship outfit are in search of a centre-back and they could go back to a familiar face to beef up that area.

It has been claimed that Bristol City’s 28-year-old centre-back Atkinson, in whom they hold a long-term interest, is on their agenda.

Atkinson spent the second half of the 2024/25 campaign with Pompey, where he made 14 appearances, racking up four cautions in the process.

Last season he featured regularly for Bristol City, but his season came to an abrupt end in February with a serious ankle injury.

The 28-year-old started the first game of the season against Millwall, which ended with a 2-0 defeat for Michael Skubala’s side and was on the bench for their game against Pompey at the weekend.

Portsmouth signed 20-year-old Benjamin Arthur on loan from Premier League outfit Brentford to add to their defensive set-up early this summer.

Now it remains to be seen whether Atkinson, who has two more years left on his contract with Bristol City, will be able to secure a move to Fratton Park before the window closes.
