Abu Kamara could be on the move from Hull City soon, and Portsmouth should be keen on bringing the 22-year-old back to Fratton Park

Hull City's overspending problems from previous years are still sitting in the rear-view mirror, and numerous players deemed surplus to requirements could be on their way out of the club this month.

It's been revealed that the Tigers must raise around £6 million in player sales before July 1 to ensure they remain within Financial Fair Play rulings and avoid being punished ahead of what is already set to be a challenging campaign back in the Premier League.

It's already expected that there'll be a player reshuffle in East Yorkshire this summer, as Hull get their squad ready for the top flight, but some of those who will be deemed surplus to requirements could see their departures accelerate.

Hull Live states that Abu Kamara could be on the list of potential sales, following a campaign on loan at La Liga club Getafe that could never get going due to selection problems and a foot injury, which kept him out for close to five months.

It was only a couple of years ago that the wideman was one of the more sought-after talents in the Championship, coming off the back of a successful campaign at Portsmouth during their League One-winning term. If he's to leave this summer, perhaps a return to Fratton Park should be on the cards.

Kamara's first taste of sustained senior football after coming through the Norwich City academy came at Portsmouth during the 2023/24 season. Before then, the 22-year-old had played just three times at Carrow Road.

John Mousinho brought him to Fratton Park ahead of his first full campaign in the dugout, and he'd go on to become one of the stars of the third-tier title-winning Pompey side.

He appeared in all 46 league outings, starting 37 of them, scored eight times and added 10 assists, too. A couple of EFL trophy goals and an assist in the EFL Cup brought his total to 10 goals and 11 assists, as the then-20-year-old played 52 times across the entire season.

Heading into the 2024/25 campaign, Kamara had plenty of hype around him, but it seemed that his future wasn't going to lie with Norwich, after the winger handed in a transfer request late on in the summer window.

The Canaries agreed a deal worth up to £4.5 million if add-ons were met, selling him to Hull, who had just come off the back of a seventh-placed finish under Liam Rosenior. Ultimately, that fee was too great for a newly-promoted side such as Portsmouth, so Pompey missed out on a reunion then.

Then, last summer, John Mousinho's side were credited with interest once again, but missed out once again when he made the switch to Spain to play in the top flight with Getafe.

Portsmouth would be hoping that it would be the third time's a charm in their pursuit of a permanent deal for Kamara this summer, if they were to move for him. After a campaign filled with disappointment in front of goal this past season, having someone with his creative spark could be key to ensuring that Pompey aren't in a relegation battle next term.

Abu Kamara would be a statement signing — it'd show that Portsmouth are willing to spend

While Hull will need to sell players such as Kamara within the coming weeks to remain within financial constraints, that doesn't mean that they'd be willing to accept any price below what they feel to be good value for the 22-year-old.

With the Tigers spending up to £4.5 million on the wideman, you can expect that they wouldn't be accepting much less than £3 million to avoid making too much of a loss on him — a fee that perhaps may still prove to be too much for Portsmouth to pay.

However, John Mousinho has outlined his wishes to manage a club capable of pushing further away from the drop zone and has called for the owners to invest more this summer. A move for Kamara, if it would cost around the £2.5-£3 million mark, would indicate that they're willing to do that.

Additionally, moving for the 22-year-old would definitely get Pompey fans excited, given their memories of his time at Fratton Park not too long ago.

It would allow Adrian Segecic, their top scorer from last season, to move into a more central role, and, if Josh Murphy can stay fit, an attacking midfield three of Murphy, Segecic and Kamara, providing he can return to his best, would be rather dangerous in 2026/27.

So, not only would a move for Kamara prove a popular one, but it would also send a statement to the rest of the Championship that Portsmouth are ready to push on and become a more established mid-table outfit. In many ways, it would be a win-win.
