Following their recent promotion to the Barclays Women’s Championship, Portsmouth have announced the news that they will begin transitioning towards full-time professional status ahead of the 2024/2025 season.

Pompey announced the news via a post on their official club website last night.

After becoming champions of the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division, Portsmouth secured their place in the Barclays Women’s Championship for the very first time in their history. The club will now offer professional contracts to their players as they aim to be as competitive as possible in the second tier next season. The players will be supported by a full-time backroom team, along with an enhanced off-field operational structure.

Speaking following last night’s announcement, head coach Jay Sadler said “This is a significant step forward for the club, and we are incredibly excited about moving to a full-time professional model. This transition will allow us to increase our contact time, enhance our preparation, and ultimately enable us to compete at a higher level.

“By providing our players and staff with the opportunity to train and develop on a full-time basis, we will unlock further potential and heavily increase our chances of achieving even more success for the club.”

Portsmouth will begin their Barclays Women’s Championship adventure on the weekend of 7-8 September 2024. The 2024/2025 Barclays Women’s Championship fixtures will be announced in due course.
