Portugal and Switzerland played out an enthralling 2-2 draw in their opening Euro 2022 fixture, as despite going two goals down within five-minutes Portugal will wonder how they couldn’t find the extra goal they needed.
Scorers: Gomes 58′, Silva 65′; Sow 2′, Kiwic 5′
Switzerland stormed into an early lead as, within 90-seconds, the ball broke down the right wing with Ana-Maria Crnogorčević.
Crnogorčević’s low ball into the box was pushed out but only as far as Coumba Sow whose first-time shot nestled into the bottom corner.
With Portugal still reeling from falling behind so early the Swiss doubled their lead. Ramona Bachmann’s free-kick was headed him at the back post by the towering Rahel Kiwic.
As was to be expected, Switzerland dropped off as the half went on but Portugal weren’t able to fashion any clear-cut chances.
The second half, however, was a different story. A barrage of continuous corner kicks finally paid off for the Portuguese as although Diana Gomes’ initial header was well saved, the 23-year-old followed up and bundled the ball over the line.
Seven minutes later and they were level as Jéssica Silva swept home a wonderfully deft volley as she met Tatiana Pinto’s cross.
Both sides had glorious chances to win the game with a combination of last-ditch tackles, stand-out saves, heroic blocks and the crossbar coming to each team’s rescue.
In the end, the spoils are shared leaving both teams with an upward challenge to make it out of their group.
