Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Rennes
Some welcome news for supporters of Portugal and Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday evening, as full-back Nuno Mendes made his long-awaited comeback after ten months out of action.
Gonçalo Ramos’ stoppage-time penalty earned PSG a point in the French capital, but the appearance of Mendes was one of the leading talking points, especially for Seleção fans ahead of the European Championships.
Mendes has been out since the back end of last season with hamstring problems, which required surgery after a relapse in September. The former Sporting man was introduced in the 71st minute to a strong ovation from the home crowd, as PSG trailed to Amine Gouiri’s first-half goal for Rennes.
In the end it was fellow Portuguese Ramos who saved the champions from defeat. Ramos, who came on in place of Kylian Mbappé just five minutes before Mendes was called, was eventually awarded a penalty by VAR in the 94th minute when he was bundled over in the box. Ex-Benfica striker Ramos stepped up to confidently smash his penalty past Steve Mandanda to ensure PSG remain unbeaten in the league since September.
