Portuguese outlet links Corinthians academy striker with Sporting move

In early January, the winter transfer window begins, and the first speculations in the soccer market start to emerge. According to the Portuguese newspaper ‘A Bola’, Sporting is interested in strengthening the left wing and has Wesley, who was developed in Corinthians' youth academy, as one of their targets.

However, the Portuguese club's first option is Yeremay Hernández, who is currently a standout at Deportivo La Coruña, Spain. Currently, Wesley is at Al-Nassr, Saudi Arabia – the club of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo – and has been getting limited playing time under coach Jorge Jesus.

Given this, if they do not advance with the La Coruña standout, Sporting has the Son of Terrão as one of their targets. Wesley was sold by Corinthians to Saudi football in August 2024 for 20 million euros (over R$ 100 million) after losing space and declining in performance in the early second half of last year, when the Alvinegro was led by coach Ramón Díaz, now at Internacional.

Wesley made his debut for Corinthians in April 2022, in a 1-1 draw with Portuguesa, from Rio de Janeiro, in Londrina, in the first leg of the third phase of the Copa do Brasil that year. Later, he returned to the Alvinegro's youth categories and was promoted to the main squad in the early months of 2023, where he started getting more playing time with Vanderlei Luxemburgo, starting in May of that year.

The young player joined Corinthians at just 13 years old, playing in the youth categories of the club at Parque São Jorge, both in field and futsal, and for the team, he scored seven goals and provided four assists in 85 games (27 wins, 27 draws, and 31 losses) wearing the Corinthians jersey.

In the main team, he did not win any titles. However, his most important achievement in the youth category happened in 2021, when he was a standout for Timãozinho in winning the São Paulo U-17 Championship that year, against Palmeiras, at Allianz Parque. Since joining Al-Nassr, he has scored three goals and provided three assists in 31 matches. The information was taken from the site Ogol.

If the negotiation with Sporting materializes, Corinthians retained a share of Wesley's economic rights and also has the right to FIFA's Solidarity Mechanism (up to 2.5%), as they are the player's training club.
