Positive Sheffield Wednesday transfer update emerges

The plummeting ride that the Owls are on is slightly less worse now.

Sheffield Wednesday are no longer looking to sell players, in what can be considered a slight move in the right direction amid turbulent financial times at Hillsborough.

The manic period that hit its climax when the Owls were placed under three separate transfer embargoes by the EFL, on top of a three-window-long transfer ban, seemed to have passed.

Two of those embargoes - the ones regarding payment of club staff and monies owed to HMRC - have since been lifted, leaving just the one embargo for failure to pay other clubs for past transfers.

Dejphon Chansiri's initial inability to provide the requisite funds to properly run the football club forced Wednesday to offload a number of its promising talents for cut-price fees. First-team wingers Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba both departed for relatively miniscule fees to join Rangers and Samsunspor, respectively.

Academy talent Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri has also been sold by the club. The 15-year-old has joined Manchester City as part of a deal that's worth up to £1.5 million.

Sheffield Wednesday receive transfer boost

This firesale period looks to be over, though, as The Star have reported that Wednesday are no longer actively trying to sell their players.

They have limited first-team options anyway, less than three weeks out from the start of the season, but, despite reported interest in players like Pierce Charles, Max Lowe and Yan Valery, the Owls want to hold onto what they have.

Amidst all this, Wednesday have also had as many as eight of their players, who were not paid their May or June wages, hand in their notices to the club, as per The Star. Only two were successful in seeking their releases from the club - Michael Smith and Josh Windass. The former has already joined Preston North End, while Wrexham looks set to be the landing spot for the latter.

As things stand, no more players are expected to join them in having their contracts terminated, but, should there be further issues with the July payments, The Star have said that some players may resubmit their notices to Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday will take any positivity that they can get

The state of play at Hillsborough remains an extremely dire one. Their inability to purchase new players, or even pay loan fees, until 2027 will seriously harm their chances of doing anything productive this season, given the amount of talent that they have already lost.

It may just be a babystep in the right direction, but the now non-existent necessity to pawn their best assets is a slight improvement in the situation.
