Kelechi Iheanacho thought he'd grabbed an equaliser early in the second half against SC Braga, latching on to a defensive mistake and finishing superbly.
It would have been the perfect birthday present for the striker, who turns 29 today (October 3), and it would have brought Celtic back into a match that they trailed due to a first-half goal from their Portuguese opponents.
But the Nigerian internationalist was denied his second consecutive Europa League goal by a mystifying decision that saw his strike ruled out for handball.
That decision followed a lengthy VAR check, although all the replays of the goal from a variety of different camera angles clearly show that the ball hit Iheanacho's face and did not come into contact with his arm at any point.
It was a frustrating moment on a night of disappointment for the Hoops, and speaking to Celtic TV after the game, the striker said: "The ball didn’t hit my hand, it hit my face. It was an awful decision and it changed the game because we could have been back in the game.
“It was a disappointing result and we’re gutted we lost. But we don’t need to put our heads down, we just need to focus now on Sunday’s game.”
