With Tottenham’s triumph in the Europa League, Australian manager Ange Postecoglou has entered an exclusive club of non-European coaches to have lifted a UEFA trophy
Though born just outside Athens, Greece, Postecoglou moved to Australia at the age of five. He’s often described himself as “a product of Greece, but made in Australia” - a sentiment that neatly captures his dual heritage.
Raised in Melbourne, he rose to prominence managing the Australian national team before enjoying a successful spell at Celtic in Scotland.
He arrived at Spurs with high expectations, but his first season proved turbulent, with speculation mounting over his future. That changed dramatically with a memorable victory over Manchester United, securing Tottenham the Europa League crown and a coveted place in next season’s Champions League.
Postecoglou joins just four other non-European coaches to have claimed UEFA silverwar. The list includes Luis Antonio Carniglia (winner of the first Champions League titles with Real Madrid), Helenio Herrera (two-time Champions League winner with Inter), Alfredo Di Stéfano (winner of the Cup Winners' Cup with Valencia) and Diego Simeone (two-time Europa League and Super Cup winner with Atlético de Madrid).
