Nottingham Forest’s first European home game in nearly three decades ended in disappointment as Midtjylland left the City Ground with a 3-2 victory, leaving Ange Postecoglou still searching for his first win in charge.
Forest started with energy, Elliot Anderson and Callyum Hudson-Odoi probing the Danish defence and testing keeper Elías Rafn Ólafsson from range.
Midtjylland took the lead in the 18th minute when Mads Sorensen flicked on a free-kick, allowing Ousmane Diao to prod home at the far post.
The hosts responded quickly, and Dan Ndoye levelled after 22 minutes, finishing from close range following a neat Morgan Gibbs-White pass.
The joy was short-lived, however, as Sorensen scored again just two minutes later, capitalising on another corner to restore the Danish side’s lead.
The second half saw Forest pile forward in search of an equaliser. Ibrahim Sangare and Nicolò Savona both went close, while Postecoglou introduced Chris Wood to add firepower.
The New Zealand striker twice thought he had drawn Forest level, only for offside calls to deny him on each occasion.
Midtjylland, despite coming under pressure, struck with their only clear-cut chance after the break. Valdemar Andreasen raced onto a through ball and slotted home, leaving Forest stunned and the home supporters venting their frustration.
A late penalty converted by Wood reduced the deficit, but it was too little, too late.
The defeat extends Postecoglou’s winless run to six games and leaves the City Ground faithful frustrated, some already calling for change. Midtjylland, meanwhile, continue to impress in Europe, making it four consecutive away wins.
