West Ham United’s decision to sack manager Julen Lopetegui is unsurprising, but the manner of his exit from the club undoubtedly leaves a sour taste.
Lopetegui is still in charge at the time of writing, yet the Hammers have engaged in lengthy talks with former Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea boss Graham Potter.
There used to be an unwritten rule in football that managers did the ‘right thing’ by each other by not discussing jobs until they were vacant. Potter clearly hasn’t read the memo.
It is unsurprising that West Ham have acted this way. They’re a club with ideas above their station – the nonsensical ‘West Ham Way’ ethos highlights that point to perfection.
However, Potter’s lack of morals is extraordinary, given his comments on the High-Performance Podcast around six weeks ago.
Potter opened up about his mental health struggles, his battle with ‘imposter syndrome’ and how there was a stigma around showing empathy for others.
Fast forward to this week, and Potter has shown scant regard for Lopetegui’s mindset by engaging in talks about his job.
West Ham and Potter should hang their heads in shame for the way they have conducted themselves. Let’s hope that what goes around comes around for both of them.
Tottenham Hotspur face Liverpool in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final this evening. With the home side missing a ton of players, this one could get ugly.
