📈 Power Rankings: Sporting storm, Bundesliga is back

10. Bayer Leverkusen (🆕)

Bayer Neverlusen are back!

The Bundesliga champions opened their defence of the title with a typical late, late show against Borussia Monchengladbach. Things appeared to be going swimmingly for Xabi Alonso’s men when Granit Xhaka and Florian Wirtz fired them into a two-goal lead, only for Monchengladbach to fight back and level five minutes from time.

A lesser side might have wilted at the collapse, but Leverkusen’s spirit is becoming famous. Wirtz found a winner, in the 11th minute of stoppage time.

9. PSV Eindhoven (🆕)

PSV Eindhoven’s defence of the Eredivisie has begun in ominous fashion, as the Dutch champions have racked up 15 goals in their first three games.

Last weekend’s 7-1 win at Almere featured SEVEN different scorers.

8. Chelsea (🆕)

The Enzo Maresca era has launched.

Chelsea bounced back from defeat on the opening weekend to rip apart Wolves at Molineux. After an end-to-end first half finished with four goals evenly shared, Chelsea ran riot after the break. Noni Madueke scored a 14-minute hat-trick, each assisted by the brilliant Cole Palmer, and Joao Felix slammed home on his second debut for the Blues.

Much improved.

7. Liverpool (👍 Last week: 10)

So far, so good for Arne Slot.

The Dutchman has embraced the challenge of replacing Jurgen Klopp and has opened his reign with back-to-back wins.

This might be Slot’s side but Liverpool’s opening goal against Brentford certainly had hallmarks of Klopp’s best teams. A lightning counter-attack saw the Reds race from their own box into the final third, with Luis Diaz putting the finishing touch on the move. Mohamed Salah scored the second to seal the win. It’s maximum points and consecutive clean sheets for Slot’s Liverpool.

Next up: A trip to Old Trafford.

6. Juventus (🆕)

Thiago Motta’s rebuild of Juventus is beginning to take shape with the Old Lady sitting pretty at the top of the Serie A table.

After easing past Como on the opening weekend, Juventus secured their second 3-0 win of the season against Verona. Their opponents topped this table last time out after stunning Napoli in their season-opener, but Verona were no match for Motta-ball. Dusan Vlahovic scored twice for the Bianconeri to open his account for the campaign.

5. Arsenal (👍 Last week: 9)

Arsenal overcame an early-season acid test to win 2-0 at Aston Villa. The Gunners lost both fixtures to Villa last season, with former boss Unai Emery proving to be their nemesis.

Mikel Arteta’s team rode their luck on occasion in a below-par performance, but goals from substitute Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey secured three points at one of the toughest away venues in the division. An ugly win? Perhaps. A performance of potential champions? Maybe.

4. Brighton (👍 Last week: 6)

Brighton have made a fine start to life under new head coach Fabian Hurzeler. After swatting aside Everton on the opening weekend, the Seagulls snatched a late win over Manchester United at the Amex Stadium.

It wasn’t quite as convincing as their superb opening showing, but this was a performance that proved Brighton remain a thorn in the side of England’s elite. Brighton have now won five of the last six league meetings between the teams.

3. Paris Saint-Germain (🆕)

No Kylian Mbappe? No problem.

The French champion scored six times without reply against Montpellier at the Parc des Princes, to take their customary position at the top of the Ligue 1 table. Bradley Barcola was on target twice for the Parisians, with Marco Asensio, Achraf Hakimi, Warren Zaire-Emery also on the scoresheet.

2. Manchester City (👍 Last week: 3)

Manchester City bounced back from an early setback to dismantle newly-promoted Ipswich Town at the Etihad. After falling behind to Sammie Szmodics shock opener, the Citizens scored three times inside four minutes to take control of the contest.

Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick as the back-to-back Golden Boot winner takes an early lead in the 2024/25 standings. He’s now claimed 10 match balls since joining City in 2022, seven of which have come in the Premier League.

1. Sporting Lisbon (👍 Last week: 2)

For the second successive week, Sporting Lisbon blitzed opposition on the road. Fresh from a six-goal win at Nacional, Ruben Amorim’s side produced a five-star performance to dismantle Farense and maintain their perfect start to the Primeira Liga season.

Viktor Gyokeres (who else?) helped himself to a hat-trick in the 5-0 win to make six goals in three league fixtures. The Swede has been unstoppable since moving to Lisbon and is showing no signs of slowing. The Portuguese champions look a cut above the competition once again.
