Crystal Palace head to Dublin knowing a win would push them closer to last-16 qualification in the Europa Conference League, despite currently sitting in 18th place.
Oliver Glasner’s Eagles arrive in Ireland buoyed by back-to-back Premier League victories, consolidating their hold on fourth place.
Palace’s European campaign has been inconsistent, though.
Defeat in Strasbourg a fortnight ago was particularly frustrating, with Palace striking the post twice and wasting multiple chances before conceding late.
However, with Shelbourne and KuPS still to come, the Eagles remain firmly in contention for a place in the next round.
Meanwhile, Shelbourne are still searching for their first goal of the group stage. Joey O’Brien’s men have proven stubborn in spells but remain winless after four matchdays.
Sitting 34th in the 36-team standings, they need a shock result to keep their faint hopes alive.
This will be the first-ever competitive meeting between Shelbourne and Crystal Palace.
Shelbourne have never beaten English opposition in European competition, and Thursday marks the 28th attempt by a League of Ireland side to defeat an English club.
The Reds have kept matches tight. In all three of their defeats, they held out until nearly the hour mark.
However, Crystal Palace will surely pepper them. The Eagles have had 65 attempts on goal in the competition. Only four teams have had more.
Palace will be hoping on Yeremy Pino to unlock Shelbourne. He has two assists. Only Strasbourg’s Martial Godo (three) has provided more so far.
The FA Cup winners’ away record is also encouraging. They have won four consecutive domestic away matches, either side of their setback in Strasbourg.
Glasner remains without Daniel Munoz, who continues his recovery from a knee issue, while Ismaila Sarr is still sidelined with an ankle injury.
Cheick Doucoure, Caleb Kporha, Rio Cardines and Chadi Riad are also unavailable.
Rotation is expected for the Dublin trip. Dean Henderson should retain his spot in goal, while Chris Richards and Maxence Lacroix continue as pillars in the back three.
Jaydee Canvot is expected to join them, giving Marc Guehi a breather. Nathaniel Clyne and Borna Sosa are set to start as wing-backs.
In midfield, Jefferson Lerma and Will Hughes are poised to return, allowing Adam Wharton and Daichi Kamada to rest.
Justin Devenny could be given an opportunity in an advanced midfield role alongside Yeremy Pino. Joel Drakes-Thomas, 16, could also feature.
Eddie Nketiah, fresh from scoring against Fulham, is expected to lead the line as Glasner looks to rotate Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The 28-year-old Frenchman is still seeking his first goal of the European campaign.
Dean Henderson; Jaydee Canvot, Maxence Lacroix, Chris Richards; Nathaniel Clyne, Jefferson Lerma, Will Hughes, Borna Sosa; Justin Devenny, Yeremy Pino; Eddie Nketiah.
