Football League World takes a look at two Sheffield United stars who could be sold next summer, and predicts their potential transfer fees
Sheffield United are vying for an immediate Premier League return, but face tough competition from fellow automatic promotion hopefuls Leeds United, Burnley and Sunderland.
The Blades will hope that their successful January transfer window, which saw seven new faces arrive at Bramall Lane, can give them an advantage over their rivals in the race for a top-two spot.
Thanks to new owners COH Sports, Chris Wilder's men welcomed quality additions to South Yorkshire, such as striker Tom Cannon, forward Ben Brereton Diaz, midfielder Hamza Choudhury, full-back Harry Clarke and former Arsenal defender Rob Holding.
There was even room for two bonus signings, as AI-driven research prompted the acquisitions of young wingers Jefferson Caceres and Christian Nwacukwu, who had previously been plying their trade in Peru and Bulgaria respectively.
But while the Blades look to land a place in next season's Premier League, Football League World takes a look at two of Wilder's stars who could be sold this summer, in the wake of likely transfer interest if United remain a Championship club:
Gus Hamer first joined the Blades from Coventry City, in a deal reportedly worth £15m ahead of last term's top-flight campaign.
During his last season with the Sky Blues, the attacking midfielder notched a strong league return of nine goals and 10 assists, which fired the West Midlands outfit all the way to the Championship play-off final.
Ultimately, the Sky Blues lost out to eventual promotion winners Luton Town at Wembley via a penalty shootout defeat, but Hamer himself secured his move to the Premier League when he joined the Blades.
The Dutchman was not as prolific in the top-flight as he has been in the Championship, although he did score four goals and create six assists for a Blades side who were relegated.
He has already bettered those figures at second tier level this season, and his unwavering eye for goal appears likely to attract suitors in the transfer market this summer.
Last summer, the Blades received an offer worth around £13m for Hamer's services from Championship promotion rivals Leeds, which they rejected, with Wilder adding that such a bid was "a million miles away" from the club's valuation of the talented 27-year-old.
However, similar interest could resurface come the end of the season, and while Hamer's contract runs until 2027, the South Yorkshire outfit could demand £25m for such a quality player.
Since joining the Blades during the summer of 2022, Anel Ahmedhodzic has proven himself as a rock in central defence, particularly at Championship level.
He made 40 second tier appearances during the 2022/23 campaign, which ultimately witnessed Wilder's men secure promotion to the Premier League, and even scored six goals in the process.
Last season, he made 31 top-flight outings, but his efforts were not enough to prevent the Blades from suffering the fate of immediate relegation back to the Championship.
Ahmedhodzic has once again demonstrated his defensive solidity at second tier level, recently helping his side maintain clean sheets during wins against the likes of Derby County and Norwich City.
Last summer, Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers set their sights on a move for the Bosnia and Herzegovina international, further exemplifying his top tier credentials.
The Blades signed Ahmedhodzic from Swedish side Malmö in a deal reportedly worth over £5m back in 2022, and he has subsequently proven his worth in the English game.
His contract at Bramall Lane runs out in 2026, so this year marks the last summer transfer window in which Wilder and co can cash in on his services.
FLW predicts that the Blades could recoup a fee of £10m for the reliable 25-year-old who still boasts unfulfilled potential, and is deserving of another shot at Premier League level.
