What a week it’s been for Manchester United and Michael Carrick.
A derby day win over Manchester City could have been put down to new manager bounce, but Sunday’s success at Arsenal felt more. United blew the title race open with an upset of the league leaders in North London, coming from behind to claim a 3-2 win at the Emirates.
A stunning goal from Matheus Cunha won it late on for United, who became the first team to win at the Emirates this season. It was a first league win at Arsenal since 2017 and the first time Arsenal had been beaten after taking the lead this season.
Back-to-back wins over the Premier League’s top two might have catapulted Carrick into contention for the permanent gig.
Regardless of whether West Ham do go down or not this season, the Irons will face a fight to hold onto Mateus Fernandes. The summer signing has been a bright spark in an otherwise sorry season and produced a brilliant all-action performance in this weekend’s win over Sunderland.
At the London Stadium, he was everywhere to drag West Ham to back-to-back wins. The 21-year-old won 100% of his ground duels (7/7), led the contest for tackles (5/5), misplaced just one of his nine attempted long passes, and scored an absolute cracker, too.
A top, top display from the midfielder.
Perhaps no player has enjoyed a greater lease of life under Michael Carrick than Patrick Dorgu.
The Denmark international had looked fairly ordinary as a wing-back under Ruben Amorim, but is enjoying his football further forward under the interim manager. After scoring in last weekend’s derby win over Manchester City, Dorgu was at it again against Arsenal. This goal, however, will be replayed for some time. What a hit.
Lewis Miley must surely have thought he’d scored here. The Newcastle midfielder’s flick was met by a full-stretch save from Emi Martinez, who concluded his 200th Premier League appearance with a clean sheet.
More importantly for Aston Villa, it was a first win at Newcastle in 21 years.
Liam Rosenior has called Estevao Willian a ‘special talent’ and it’s difficult to disagree on the evidence we’ve seen this season.
The winger became the youngest Chelsea player in 33 years to score and assist in a Premier League fixture this weekend.
Star boy.
Virgil van Dijk. The Liverpool captain has set the standard for centre-backs across his time at Liverpool but is enduring a rut right now. Van Dijk failed to deal with a long ball in the build-up to Bournemouth’s opener this weekend, before playing Alex Jimenez on side for the second.
The Dutch defender should not be absorbed of blame for Liverpool’s vulnerability this season, but the Reds’ recruitment team need to take account, too. The failure to land Marc Guehi last summer has been costly, requiring a need to squeeze every ounce out of their captain, who’s fast approaching his 35th birthday.
Liverpool’s reliance on Van Dijk to play every single minute has come back to bite them this season.
