Our Premier League Weekly Awards feature Max Dowman’s record-breaking moment and West Ham’s fast-emerging cult hero Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Each title run-in has definitive moments, and was this weekend one for Arsenal? The three points looked in danger of slipping away from the Gunners, as a valiant Everton frustrated the league leaders at the Emirates – and spurned chances to win it.
With time running out, Mikel Arteta threw on his wildcard and was rewarded. Max Dowman’s introduction changed the game, with the 16-year-old’s teasing cross leading to the opener on 89 minutes, before the teenager tore away on the counter-attack to score a second in stoppage time.
Dowman’s goal, filled with composure and drive, made him the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. What a moment for the youngster, whose future looks bright.
After Manchester City dropped points later in the night, Arsenal’s lead is now 10. A first title in over two decades is edging closer.
Konstantinos Mavropanos is in the midst of a remarkable redemption arc at West Ham. The centre-back was consigned to the flop folder after an underwhelming start at the London Stadium, but has emerged as a crucial figure under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Mavropanos was magnificent in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City, a result that extended the club’s run to one defeat in six Premier League games.
He made 10 clearances and blocked four shots with some heroic last-ditch defending, while thumping home the equaliser from Jarrod Bowen’s corner.
West Ham need more of this to survive, but Mavropanos is fast becoming a cult hero. If his – and West Ham’s performances continue, the Hammers have enough to escape trouble.
Did he mean it? The jury’s out. But we’re going to give Bernardo Silva the benefit of the doubt.
A lovely lifted finish over at the London Stadium saw the Manchester City captain break the deadlock in style.
Truly extraordinary from Riccardo Calafiori. The Italian’s instinctive scorpion-style block ensured Arsenal kept the game goalless against Everton, before scoring twice late on to claim the points
“The block from Calafiori on Dwight McNeil is unbelievable. And it tells you a little bit about maybe the way Arsenal are. They’re fighting for it, they’re defending their goal with their lives,” Moyes said after the game, as per ToffeeWeb.
“Probably in the end, I think, Raya made more saves than Jordan Pickford in the game. But the block from Calafiori was amazing”.
Jamie Carragher labelled Liverpool’s draw with Tottenham a ‘disaster’ for their Champions League hopes and accused the Reds of ‘sleepwalking’ to dropped points at Anfield.
It was the eighth time this season that Liverpool have conceded in the 90th minute or late, a record that is a huge concern.
Arne Slot. The boos at Anfield at full-time summed up the frustration with Liverpool’s form this season. Spurs arrived on Merseyside as the ideal opponents. The North Londoners have not won a Premier League game since December and had lost six in a row across all competitions.
Instead, Liverpool got in front early but failed to build on it, and there was a sense of inevitability when Richarlison equalised late on. With Aston Villa and Chelsea losing, this was a missed opportunity. Slot has credit in the bank after last season, but there is undoubtedly scrutiny on him right now.
