Premier League card counts and how Sunderland compare

Article image:Premier League card counts and how Sunderland compare

Sunderland’s Premier League return has mixed bite with resilience, they sit 11th after a 2-1 comeback win over Newcastle United before the international break. According to Sunderland Echo, their edge out of possession has brought cards as well as control. With seven games left they have an outside shot at Europe and have steered clear of relegation trouble.

Regis Le Bris has built this season on a foundation of strong defending, with Sunderland conceding 36 goals in 31 games. Only four sides have conceded more.

Only five teams have been shown more cards than Sunderland. They have 67 in total, driven by 65 yellows and two reds, and they sit sixth for bookings. For context, Chelsea have received seven reds this season, with Bournemouth on five.

Trai Hume has eight bookings, with Noah Sadiki and Reinildo Mandava on seven and Omar Alderete on six, the only quartet above five. Hume’s eight is the third-highest in the division, Brighton defender Lewis Dunk leads on 10 and is the only player in double figures.

Reinildo was the first Sunderland player sent off in the league this season, after 33 minutes of the 1-1 home draw with Aston Villa in September. Luke O’Nien was dismissed six minutes after coming on, at the end of the 3-0 defeat at Manchester City in December.

Enzo Le Fee, Alderete and Reinildo have committed 26 fouls each, just ahead of Dan Ballard and Hume on 25.
