It is always important for a club like FC Barcelona to secure and plan for its future ahead of time. Unlike other top clubs at the moment, La Blaugrana do not have the luxury of being able to spend freely and change plans up in the last minute. Without that kind of privilege at their disposal, Barcelona must focus on being a lot more precise and methodical with their moves.
For that reason, one of the priorities for the club are the renewal negotiations with most of their key players. With the kind of financial restrictions imposed upon the club, it becomes imperative for them to tie down their most important players and secure their services for the future.
However, for that to happen, there must be constant communication of desire and intent between the club and the entourage of any given player. In the case of 33-year-old Iñigo Martínez, however, there is not a lot of noise on the renewal front reportedly.
As a result of that, according to Fichajes, Premier League club Manchester United is now keeping an eye out on how Martínez’s future unfolds. With his contract set to expire in the summer, the Spaniard would end up becoming a free agent unless he extends his stay at FC Barcelona.
For the Manchester-based side, Martínez would be an acquisition that they would look fondly at. Despite his age, he has shown his quality and consistency this season and his potential arrival as a free agent is something that entices the Premier League club.
Moreover, they would reportedly be willing to offer him a lucrative deal as well if he happens to help them materialize such a move. Yet, for Barcelona, he remains a key player and someone whose continuity would be preferred over letting him leave in the summer. As for the player himself, he does not seem too bothered about his contractual situation just yet.
However, his importance to Hansi Flick’s team cannot be understated, as he has been constantly available and his profile has been quite useful for Barcelona this season, especially with the injuries that the club has had to deal with. On the other hand, the possible introduction of Manchester United into the equation will certainly make any kind of negotiations a bit more complex.
