A fresh insight into the future of Athletic Club star Álex Berenguer has come to the fore online.

And the news will no doubt be met with widespread concern on the part of those hopeful of the attacker ultimately opting to stay put at San Mamés.

This comes amid confirmation that, after a fresh round of talks, Athletic and Berenguer are no closer to finding an agreement on the terms of a contract renewal.

As per a report from AS, cited by Sport, the powers that be in the Basque Country have been locked in negotiations with Berenguer and his representatives for several weeks now.

As much comes ahead of the expiration of the 28-year-old’s Athletic contract at the end of the season.

Both parties are keen to prolong their relationship, but a financial agreement is understood to be no closer to being found than when discussions were first kicked into gear some time ago.

A renewal announcement is therefore viewed as unlikely any time soon, with Berenguer departing San Sebastián as a free agent an increasingly realistic possibility.

And a number of clubs from both England and Italy are understood to be keeping a close eye on the situation of the talented winger, who has racked up seven goals and two assists in all competitions across the season to date.
