Premier League clubs fell deeper into the red as cumulative pre-tax losses jumped more than 600% year on year to £948m (€1.1bn) in 2024-2025, from £135m (€157m) in 2023-2024.

Deloitte said in its annual football finance review, published on Wednesday, that the spike reflected transfer spending and a lack of significant profits from exceptional sales, adding that most clubs now depend on external financing to ensure liquidity and that football cannot rely on simply adding more content to ensure sustainable growth.

Across Ligue 1, combined pre-tax losses rose from €181m in 2023-2024 to €456m in 2024-2025.

The European football market grew 6% to €40.2bn, helped by changes to UEFA competitions and the arrival of the Conference League.

The expansion of UEFA and FIFA competitions has brought financial gains to the top five European leagues.
