The Premier League is preparing to tweak its incoming squad cost ratio rules before they take effect next season, a move that would give clubs more room in the transfer market.

The Guardian reports that an amendment discussed at Thursday’s shareholders’ meeting would let clubs that stayed under their 85 per cent spending allowance for two seasons roll over up to 10 per cent into year three, allowing them to exceed the cap without sanction.

Under the SCR, clubs are limited to spending 85 per cent of revenue on player costs. Approved in November, the framework includes a levy payable to the league for breaches, and a six-point deduction if spending hits 115 per cent of revenue.

The proposal, initially tabled by Brighton before Christmas, was outlined to clubs by the league.

The measure, described as a levy offset, is expected to be voted through and would be capped at 10 per cent to avoid favouring sides in Europe, where the SCR threshold stands at 70 per cent.
