The Guardian reports that Premier League clubs are not prepared to overrule PGMOL guidance or add to VAR’s duties, a stance that points to resistance to World Cup-style changes next season.

Following discussions with PGMOL, the league has been advised against widening the system to cover corners and second yellow cards.

IFAB approved a regulation change in February that will permit such checks from next month. FIFA requested the powers for the World Cup, where referees are set to use them.

PGMOL are concerned that bringing corners and bookings into scope could prolong matches, risk upsetting broadcasters and heap further pressure on officials.

FIFA have a different view. Referees committee chair Pierluigi Collina and president Gianni Infantino are said to believe a wrong corner call could heavily affect a World Cup game.

VAR has dominated debate this season, and a March survey suggested 75 per cent of fans oppose the technology.
