An African star has offered himself to Liverpool as he rejects a Premier League giant.

Let's be honest, Liverpool's transfer window hasn't unfolded the way many supporters expected.

Given everything that happened last season, there was a widespread expectation that the club would move quickly in the market. A new manager had arrived, several high-profile players had departed and there were obvious gaps throughout the squad. On paper, it looked like Liverpool were heading into one of their biggest rebuilds in recent years.

Instead, the window has been surprisingly quiet.

That doesn't necessarily mean Liverpool have been standing still. Recruitment is often a lot more complicated than it appears from the outside, and there have been several factors working against the club this summer.

The biggest has been the amount of change behind the scenes. Andoni Iraola has arrived with a completely different footballing philosophy and a clear idea of how he wants Liverpool to play.

That immediately changes the recruitment process. Rather than simply targeting the best available players, Liverpool now have to identify footballers who fit Iraola's tactical demands, his pressing structure and the physical intensity his system requires.

Finding those profiles isn't always straightforward, particularly when multiple clubs are competing for the same players.

There has also been significant change away from the pitch.

Michael Edwards has stepped away from his role, while Richard Hughes is preparing to leave. Recruitment departments rely on continuity and long-term planning, so changes at executive level inevitably affect decision-making. Strategies have to be reviewed, responsibilities shift and major investments become even more carefully considered.

Then there was the World Cup.

International tournaments almost always slow the transfer market. Players naturally prioritise representing their countries, while selling clubs often prefer to wait until the tournament has finished before making any major decisions. A strong World Cup can significantly increase a player's value, so there is very little incentive to negotiate early.

Liverpool were then dealt another setback when Yan Diomande, who had emerged as the club's preferred attacking target, opted to join Paris Saint-Germain instead and now he's on his way to Real Madrid. Missing out on a priority target is frustrating under any circumstances, but it becomes an even bigger problem when there are very few players on the market who offer a similar profile.

The consequence is that Liverpool have had to reassess their options rather than rushing into an alternative simply for the sake of making a signing.

Now, though, the context has changed.

The World Cup is over, the market is beginning to accelerate and Liverpool no longer have the luxury of waiting indefinitely.

There is still plenty of work to do. The attack needs reinforcements following Mohamed Salah's departure, there are question marks in defence, midfield still requires attention and Iraola needs players capable of executing his demanding style of football from day one.

And it looks like Liverpool are finally clicking into gear. They've accelerated a move for Bradley Barcola and they could also be signing another PSG winger.

Ibrahim Mbaye is reportedly on Liverpool's radar, and a new report from TEAMtalk has claimed that Mbaye has rejected the advances of Premier League giants Aston Villa.

Why?

Well, the report claims he's instead offered himself to Liverpool and Manchester City. The Senegalese winger, who won the AFCON earlier this year, clearly wants to join a big team.

Liverpool do need extra depth in attack. Barcola likely won't be enough - especially if Cody Gakpo leaves. So Mbaye would make sense.

However, Liverpool just need to figure out whether he is the right fit on the market right now. There are plenty of other options as well.
