The Premier League has opened an investigation after the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park was briefly halted in the second half following a report of discriminatory abuse directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.

The Premier League said its on-field anti-discrimination protocol was applied, that an investigation is under way, that it offers full support to the player and both clubs, and that it will continue working with stakeholders and authorities to keep stadiums inclusive and welcoming, reiterating that racism has no place in the game.

On the pitch, Sunderland came from behind to win 2-1 at St James’ Park and complete a derby double over Newcastle United.

Anthony Gordon put Newcastle ahead early on. Chemsdine Talbi levelled 12 minutes after the restart.

Brian Brobbey struck in the 90th minute to seal it, his sixth of the season and only Sunderland’s 10th away Premier League goal this term.
