Premier League clubs have unanimously voted to retain the £30 cap on away tickets for the next two seasons, a move that benefits travelling supporters including those of Sunderland.
The cap, introduced in 2016, has been in place for a decade and Thursday’s vote means it will run through to the summer of 2028, covering 12 seasons in total. The Premier League said in a statement that away fans help create renowned match atmospheres, noted away attendances have risen from 82 per cent to 91 per cent since the cap began, and acknowledged additional travel costs.
The Football Supporters’ Association welcomed the extension. Chair Tom Greatrex credited campaigners and the clubs for keeping the limit, said it has saved fans millions over the past 12 years, and urged owners to address concerns that home prices are often unaffordable.
Elsewhere, Sunderland confirmed earlier this week that a number of tickets for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United were returned to sale after what the club described as a large-scale breach of away ticket rules.
The club said on Tuesday that a limited extra batch would be released following action against a supporter who misused their allocation. A total of 65 tickets went back on sale at 12pm for the St James’ Park fixture and have since been resold.
