With four rounds left, the mid-table race for Europe is wide open. According to NY Times, the top five reach the Champions League again, and sixth could qualify if Aston Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth under UEFA’s European performance spot system.
Brighton, sixth on 50 with goal difference +9, have momentum after beating Chelsea 3-0. A Champions League debut would crown their rise from League One in 2011.
Bournemouth, seventh on 49, have never played in Europe. With matchday income at 3.3 percent and a ground of about 11,000, UEFA money could be transformative.
Chelsea, eighth on 48, most need Champions League income after a damaging dip. They reached this season’s last 16, but now require Villa’s help. Winning the FA Cup against Manchester City on 16 May offers a Europa League route, though it pays far less.
Brentford, ninth on 48, chase a first continental berth. After five points from six games, UEFA revenues would help a club with limited off-pitch growth.
Fulham, 10th on 48, last featured in 2011-12 and were 2010 Europa League finalists. With revenues around £180m recently, qualification could push them on.
Everton, 11th on 47, have been away since 2017-18. Extra nights at the 53,000-capacity Hill Dickinson Stadium would lift income, though returns depend on the competition and progress.
Sunderland, 12th on 46, were beaten 5-0 by Nottingham Forest last Friday yet remain in touch. Europe would be their first for over half a century, Chelsea’s visit on 24 May could define it.
