According to Sunderland Echo, the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel has ruled that Brian Brobbey should have been dismissed during Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light on 12 April.

The flashpoint arrived midway through the second half, shortly after Nordi Mukiele put Sunderland ahead. As Spurs tried to manage a ball down the middle, Cristian Romero got between Brobbey and goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to shepherd it back.

Brobbey made contact from behind, Romero then collided with Kinsky. Referee Rob Jones awarded a foul but did not issue a second yellow to Brobbey, who had been booked earlier for a clash with Pedro Porro.

The KMI panel reached a split decision, with three members to two finding the on-field call incorrect. They judged the contact to be a two-handed push that met the threshold for a second caution.

Had Brobbey been dismissed, Tottenham would have had a man advantage late on, though they lost 1-0. In the aftermath, Brobbey was subjected to racist abuse on social media, which Sunderland reported to the Premier League, the platforms and the police.

The episode adds to a pattern for Jones this season regarding second yellows, with the panel listing five incorrect decisions involving him, all deemed sending-off offences.
