Sunderland’s push for Europe is alive despite a 4-3 loss at Aston Villa, and every place now carries significant prize money.
According to Sunderland Echo, seventh would deliver a UEFA Conference League berth this season and sixth the Europa League. Sunderland are two and four points off those places respectively, and they have a game in hand.
If Villa win the Europa League and remain in the top five, sixth would become a Champions League place, offering a rare opening for teams in the chase.
Merit payments rise by an average of £2.66m per position. Sunderland are currently projected to receive £26.5m in 11th, roughly matching outlay on Nordi Mukiele at £12m, Robin Roefs at £11.5m and Bertrand Traore at £2.5m.
Climbing to sixth would take their haul to £39.8m, an extra £13.3m, enough to cover the Mukiele fee with £1.3m to spare.
A slide to 14th, with Newcastle four points back, would cut that to £18.6m, £7.9m below their current projection. At the extremes, leaders Arsenal are set for £53.1m while bottom side Wolves would take £2.6m.
