Premier League pushes New Deal to more than double EFL solidarity payments, with conditions | OneFootball

The Premier League wants to finalise a New Deal with the EFL quickly, a package that would more than double solidarity payments to Leicester City and other EFL clubs.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, the 10-year offer was set out to EFL clubs last week and includes an undertaking to increase solidarity payments to the EFL by £163m a year by 2028-29, more than double the current estimate of £134m.

The plan also pledges £81m extra in the current season. The additional funding is understood to be linked to new cost controls and a move to make Carabao Cup semi-finals one leg to ease congestion.

Top-flight clubs met in London on Thursday for their first shareholders' meeting of the season and backed a swift agreement. The league said it wants a football-led resolution as soon as possible so extra money can reach EFL clubs this season.

That signalled the possibility of the Independent Football Regulator's backstop powers being used by either league if they fail to agree. The regulator is due to publish its State of the Game review in the coming weeks.

EFL clubs are understood to have been warned that using the backstop could delay a final deal by up to two years. They have been asked to give feedback on the offer before further meetings early next month.
