Carlos Baleba has moved to clarify the impact of sustained transfer speculation after months of reports linking him with Man Utd, while Brighton continue to shape their stance ahead of the January window.
The Cameroon international was heavily discussed as a potential Old Trafford arrival during the summer, with Brighton understood to have placed a nine-figure valuation on one of their most prized assets. United ultimately chose not to proceed, leaving Baleba at the Amex Stadium as Fabian Hürzeler prepared for his first full season in charge.
While Baleba has remained a regular presence in Brighton’s midfield, scrutiny has followed. His performances, though industrious and tactically disciplined, have not consistently reached the levels that previously placed him among the most talked-about young midfielders in the Premier League.

Speaking publicly this week, Baleba rejected the idea that talk of a Man Utd transfer had negatively affected him, while acknowledging the mental demands that came with such attention.
He explained that the expectation to immediately replicate last season’s form weighed heavily at the beginning of the campaign. Rather than seeing that pressure as damaging, Baleba framed it as part of his development, describing the current spell as one he must work through in order to return to his best.
Internally at Brighton, there is no suggestion of concern regarding his professionalism or commitment. Staff remain confident that his physical output, ball-carrying ability and positional intelligence continue to make him central to Hürzeler’s long-term plans.
Brighton’s position during the summer was clear: Baleba was not for sale unless an extraordinary offer arrived. That valuation, reported at around £100m, reflected both his age profile and the club’s broader strategy of retaining elite young talent until the timing is right.
Since then, there has been a subtle shift. Sources close to the situation suggest Brighton may now be prepared to listen to proposals at a reduced figure, potentially in the region of £75m. That adjustment reflects market realities rather than any desire to actively sell.
Brighton’s negotiating strength remains significant. Baleba is under long-term contract and there is no urgency from their side, particularly with European qualification still a realistic objective.
Man Utd’s midfield remains an area under review as Ruben Amorim continues to assess the balance and depth of his squad. The club explored options in the summer but were unable to land their preferred targets, leaving January as a potential opportunity to address that shortfall.
Baleba is one of several profiles admired by United’s recruitment team, valued for his athleticism, defensive range and ability to progress the ball under pressure. His age aligns with the club’s renewed focus on building a core capable of developing together over multiple seasons.
There is also awareness of competition. Bayern Munich have monitored Baleba’s situation, particularly amid uncertainty surrounding their own midfield options, though indications are that the player would prioritise a move to Man Utd should that avenue open.
United’s midfield strategy extends beyond incoming transfers. Decisions over recruitment could have a knock-on effect on existing players, particularly those seeking increased minutes during the second half of the season.
The club remain reluctant to sanction permanent departures in January, preferring loan solutions where possible to maintain squad depth. That approach reflects the uncertainty of the market and the desire to keep options open as Amorim shapes his side.
On the pitch, United’s immediate focus is domestic. Their upcoming league fixture offers an opportunity to build momentum and improve their position in the table, easing some of the pressure as discussions continue behind the scenes.
For Baleba, the message remains consistent. He is focused on regaining peak form with Brighton, while aware that interest from Man Utd and others is unlikely to fade any time soon.
