Our Premier League Team of the Week celebrates the weekend’s finest performers, featuring names from Liverpool, Manchester United and Leeds.
It wasn’t a great weekend for goalkeepers in the Premier League with clean sheets at a premium. Nick Pope held onto his at Bournemouth, making vital saves in each half to ensure Newcastle left the south coast with a point.
Showed his quality at both ends of the pitch in a performance that exemplified why he’s been one of Manchester United’s better buys of recent windows. The Moroccan did not lose a single defensive duel in an important win over Chelsea.
Andersen dominated his defensive duel with Igor Thiago against Brentford and recorded a match-leading 11 clearances. There were plenty of the trademark diagonals from the Dane too, including one perfect raking pass to release Ryan Sessegnon in the build-up to the third goal. His pinpoint distribution is a real weapon.
The Dutch defender is growing into his Manchester United career. Against Chelsea, De Ligt was outstanding and showed leadership often lacking at Old Trafford.
His improvement is evident in the numbers – no centre-back has won more defensive duels (23) than the 26-year-old in the Premier League this season.
A player enjoying himself in Oliver Glasner’s wing-back system at Crystal Palace. Mitchell created three chances in the 2-1 win at West Ham and scored Palace’s winner with a wonderful right-footed volley that was thumped past Alphonse Areola.
Ryan Gravenberch might just be the best midfielder in the Premier League on current form. The Dutchman has built on his redemption arc under Arne Slot last season to raise the level again in the early weeks of the campaign.
Against Everton this weekend, he became the youngest player ever to both score and assist for Liverpool in the Merseyside derby. An improved goal threat has added another layer to the duel-winning and press resistance, with his opener at Anfield a beauty. Still just 23, there might be more levels to go.
😎😏–
Anton Stach has fast become a cult hero, and the German is emerging as one of the signings of the season. Stach scored a spectacular first Leeds goal at Wolves, firing in a free-kick that left Jose Sa with no chance. He then showed great anticipation and awareness to set up Noah Okafor as Leeds won on the road at Molineux.
A captain’s performance when Manchester United needed him. Fernandes got the win over Chelsea underway with his 100th goal for the club, becoming just the fourth midfielder ever to reach a century of goals at Old Trafford.
Iwobi produced his best performance of the campaign as Fulham fought back to beat Brentford in a West London derby. He snapped in an equaliser at Craven Cottage, before a wonderful pass split open the Brentford defence just 90 seconds later to tee up Harry Wilson.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has arrived as a Leeds player. The free signing scored his first goal for the club at Molineux to kickstart a performance that demonstrated what he can provide for Daniel Farke.
He met Jayden Bogle’s cross with a trademark header to equalise and occupied the Wolves’ backline all game. A really good outlet for Leeds, buying fouls and winning aerial duels.
What a start he’s had at Liverpool. It’s now four goals and an assist in six games for Ekitike, who fired home what proved to be the winner in the Merseyside Derby at Anfield. In between, there were plenty of nice flicks and 100% dribbles completed (4/4).
The Frenchman is a fine all-round footballer and not prepared to give up the centre-forward role to Alexander Isak in a hurry.
