Our Premier League Team of the Weekend celebrates the finest performers of the past two days.
Only one club has multiple entries this week, with a nice spread of teams represented in our lineup.
After a brilliant first half in which West Ham took a two-goal lead over Bournemouth, Alphonse Areola faced a barrage of shots from the Cherries in the second.
The French goalkeeper pulled off a series of magnificent saves to make sure the Hammers got out of Dean Court with a point, the best of which saw him stop Eli Junior Kroupi from eight yards out with his feet. And he set up Callum Wilson’s opener with a brilliant long ball.
There was not much Areola could do about Marcus Tavernier’s thunderous penalty or Enes Unal’s excellent finish, and those goals shouldn’t take away from what was easily his best ever performance in the Premier League.
Daniel Munoz continues to be the most exciting attacking full-back in the Premier League, although his goal against Wolves was atypical for him. The Crystal Palace man capitalised on a loose ball from a corner, tapping in from close range.
Munoz also chipped in on the defensive side, making eight clearances, three recoveries and one tackle.
Keeping a clean sheet against the worst attack in the Premier League should be a given for a team like Chelsea, but it shouldn’t take away from Tosin Adarabioyo’s performance. The defender was solid as a rock throughout, winning the most duels (10) of any player on the pitch and completing the most passes (102).
Murillo has to be one of the most fun centre-backs in the sport to watch at the moment. The Nottingham Forest man is a unit who is almost impossible to bully, even when he’s on the ball. He loves carrying the ball into contact and bouncing off opponents like they’re crash test dummies, and isn’t afraid to have a pop from distance either.
The Brazilian helped shut out Liverpool and scored the third goal of his Forest career as they secured a second successive win at Anfield. One of the best purchases the club has ever made.
Few things as sweet as beating your old team on their own patch. Even better when you play a key role. Neco Williams set up Forest’s second right after the interval, had the most tackles (6) and won the most duels (14). A monster display from the Welshman.
If you want to know why Thomas Tuchel is so keen to take Elliot Anderson to the World Cup next summer, just watch his display for Forest this past weekend. The midfielder made so many defensive contributions (16) that we’d be here all day if we listed them out individually. Not only that, but he created three chances too.
Bruno Guimaraes is simply Mr. Consistent for Newcastle. It feels like his performance level seldom drops below an 8/10 and he was fantastic against Manchester City on Saturday. The Brazilian linked up superbly with Harvey Barnes for their opener and was involved in the second as well, his header coming off the bar before falling to Barnes again.
Morgan Rogers had this position sewn up – until Eberechi Eze went beast mode on Spurs. The playmaker put away three exquisite finishes to become the Arsenal player since 1978 to score a hat-trick against Spurs. He almost had a fourth just moments after scoring his third, too.
Brentford’s Kristoffer Ajer must be wondering what wrong he must have committed in a past life to be tasked with defending against Yankuba Minteh on Saturday. The Norway international can play at centre-back or as a right-back, but Keith Andrews hung him out to dry by deploying him on the left.
Minteh ran rings around the 27-year-old, who could not get to grips with the winger’s fast feet and tricky skills. The Brighton youngster supplied a delicious assist for Danny Welbeck’s equaliser before being involved in the buildup for the winner. His blocked strike fell to Jack Hinshelwood who made no mistake on the rebound.
Callum Wilson saw all of your posts calling him washed and went on a mission to dunk on you. Bournemouth were his target and he ended scoring two of the best goals of his career in the first half. Unfortunately for him and West Ham, it was not enough to secure victory as the Cherries mounted a second-half comeback to draw 2-2.
A sensational performance from Harvey Barnes powered Newcastle to victory over City, grabbing a brace at St. James’ Park to give their season a much needed boost.
The winger engaged in some great interplay with Bruno before placing the ball into the side netting from the edge of the box. He was once again involved in the buildup before latching onto a rebound to poke home his second.
Barnes could have scored even more goals; he saw a very early chance saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma before missing a gilt-edged chance in the first half.
